The Top Drive Inside Blowout Preventer (IBOP), also known as a Top Drive Kelly Cock or IBOP Valve, is a vital safety component in oil & gas drilling operations.
It addresses the catastrophic risk of blowouts, which endanger personnel, equipment, and the environment by releasing high-pressure formation fluids (liquids/gas) at extreme velocities.
The prevalence of underbalanced drilling increases the likelihood of kicks and potential blowouts compared to conventional balanced drilling.
IBOPs are part of the well control system, specifically categorized as drill string internal preventers (alongside annular and ram preventers), designed to seal the drill string internally when kick indications arise.

Dual-Pressure Sealing Mechanism:

Pressure-Assisted Sealing (High Pressure): Utilizes system pressure to generate additional sealing force between the valve ball and the upper/lower seats, enhancing seal integrity under high pressure.
Wave Spring Pre-loading (Low Pressure): The wave spring provides consistent, pre-determined force to press the lower seat firmly against the valve ball. This ensures reliable sealing at low pressures or during closure from below, independent of system pressure differentials.
